Contest Introduction

Every year, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory runs the Cassini Scientist for a Day Essay Contest, an essay contest for youth to learn more about Saturn and the Cassini-Huygens mission.  As the mission is ending in 2017, this will be the last year of the contest, so don't miss out!

Astronomy.SG and our sponsors ST Electronics and Astrobargains are proud to be the local organizers of the Singapore edition of the contest!

The Cassini mission was launched in 1997 and entered into orbit around Saturn in 2004.  The Cassini Solstice extended mission runs until 2017, so the spacecraft is only months away from the end of its mission, when it will be sent to a fiery death in Saturn's atmosphere!

The Task

Contest participants play the role of mission scientists who need to capture images of various targets on and around Saturn in order to study them and understand more about their formation and processes.  However, Cassini can only send a limited amount of information to Earth, because it needs to transmit the data from so far away.  As such, we need YOU to tell us which target or set of targets is the most scientifically-worthy of imaging.  Justify your choice in a scientific essay.

Explore the links at the top of the page to find out more about this year's targets, rules and submission procedures to participate!

You may also refer to past years' winners' essays, but may NOT copy any material.
